Florida Window Tint Laws in 2026: What’s Actually Legal, Statute by Statute.

Updated July 23, 2026 · By the Big Shot Rides team · Coconut Creek, FL

Short answer: in Florida, your front side windows must let in at least 28% of light, windows behind the driver must let in at least 15% on cars (6% on SUVs and vans), and your windshield can only carry a strip above the AS-1 line. We install tint for a living in Coconut Creek, so we keep this page verified against the actual Florida Statutes — not copied from another blog.

The legal limits, window by window

Window tint percentage comparison scale from 15% to 90% VLT on a sedan, SunTek
SunTek VLT scale — what each tint percentage actually looks like
Window Cars (sedans/coupes) SUVs, vans, trucks (MPVs) Statute
Windshield Non-reflective strip above the AS-1 line only Same 316.2952
Front side windows 28% VLT or lighter 28% VLT or lighter 316.2953
Rear side windows 15% VLT or lighter 6% VLT or lighter 316.2954
Rear windshield 15% VLT (dual outside mirrors required with rear tint) 6% VLT (same mirror rule) 316.2954

VLT means “visible light transmission” — the percentage of light the glass plus film lets through. Lower number = darker tint. The law also gives a small measurement tolerance, which is why a meter reading a point or two off spec usually isn’t the fight it sounds like.

Two more rules people miss:

So what’s the darkest legal tint in Florida?

On a car: 28% up front, 15% in back. On an SUV, van, or truck: 28% up front and 6% — nearly limo dark — behind the driver. That front-window 28% is the one that gets people pulled over, because it’s the window an officer looks through at a traffic stop.

Is 5% or 15% tint legal on my front windows?

No. Anything darker than 28% VLT on the front side windows is illegal in Florida without a medical exemption — and we get asked for it weekly. We’ll tell you no, and here’s why that’s us doing you a favor: the ticket is yours, but installing illegal tint is a second-degree misdemeanor for the shop (316.2956). A shop willing to break the law on your windows is telling you how they treat rules in general — including the ones about prepping your glass properly.

The medical exemption, explained

Florida Statute 316.29545 allows darker tint for people with lupus, autoimmune conditions, and other medical conditions requiring limited light exposure. The exemption certificate comes from the FLHSMV with a physician’s certification — not from a tint shop. If you qualify, get the certificate first, keep it in the vehicle, and then we can legally install darker film on any window, windshield included.

What’s the fine for illegal tint?

It’s a noncriminal, nonmoving violation — no points — with a base fine around $30 that typically lands over $100 once county fees stack on. The bigger cost is the do-over: peeling off illegal film and paying for legal film means buying the job twice.

How to get maximum heat rejection without going too dark

This is the part most tint articles skip: darkness and heat rejection are not the same thing. Dark dyed film can pass a VLT check and still cook you at a red light. Modern ceramic films reject heat with technology, not darkness — the SunTek Evolve line we carry rejects up to 94% of infrared heat even at legal shades, and every line we install blocks 99% of UV. If your goal is a cooler car rather than a darker look, you can stay fully legal and barely feel the Florida sun. Film starts at $160, every line carries a lifetime warranty, and we don’t install dyed film at all — it fades purple and does nothing for heat.

Common Questions.

Can I get pulled over just for tint in Florida? Yes — tint alone is a valid reason for a stop if it appears darker than legal.

Do factory-tinted SUV windows count? Factory “privacy glass” is in the glass itself and isn’t regulated like film. The limits apply to aftermarket film — measured through glass and film together.

Is my out-of-state tint legal here? Florida law applies to vehicles registered in Florida. If you’ve just moved and your front windows are darker than 28%, plan on swapping them.

Will you install darker than legal if I sign a waiver? No. A waiver doesn’t change the statute, and it’s a misdemeanor on our end. We’ll get you legal, cool, and clean-looking instead.

Straight Answers.

What’s the darkest legal tint in Florida?

On a sedan: 28% VLT front sides, 15% everywhere behind them. On an SUV or truck: 28% front sides, 6% behind. Anything darker requires a state-issued medical exemption.

Is 5% (limo) tint legal in Florida?

Not on front side windows of any vehicle. On SUVs and trucks it’s legal behind the front doors. On sedans, no — 15% is the rear floor.

Will I get pulled over for legal tint?

With compliant film and the installer certificate in your glove box, a VLT meter reading settles it in seconds. That’s exactly why we file the cert on every install.
